DON PRYOR OF CBS, REPRESENTING THE COMBINED NETWORKS AND NEWS AGENCIES, GAVE AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE DEVASTATION IN TOKYO SATURDAY MORNING (JAPANESE TIME) IN THE FIRST AMERICAN BROADCAST EVER MADE FROM OVER THE JAPANESE CAPITAL CITY.

PRYOR RODE IN A B-29 SUPERFORTRESS. HE SAID THE CAPITAL WAS PARTLY BURNED OUT AND THAT BELOW HIM HE COULD SEE THE VAST AREA OF DEVASTATION--MORE THAN 56 SQUARE MILES.

"WE ARE SO HIGH THAT I CAN NOT PICK OUT ANY INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS," PRYOR SAID. WHEN THE PLANE FIRST ARRIVED OVER THE CAPITAL IT LOOKED AS IF IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO BROADCAST BECAUSE OF CLOUD COVER BUT THE CLOUDS BROKE AND THE CORRESPONDENT WAS ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE SCENE. THE TRIP WAS MADE BY A SINGLE PLANE AND ARRANGED BY THE ARMY.
