May 8, 1945 was declared Victory in Europe Day in the United States and Britain, marking the end of the war in Europe. CBS foreign correspondents told of the celebrations around the world in the aftermath of the Nazi surrender including a report by Bill Downs from Lüneburg, Germany.

However, as the dispatch below notes, the Pacific War was far from over: "Joy at the news was tempered only by the realization that the war against Japan remains to be resolved, with many casualities still ahead."
