1955. A Christmas Sing with Bing Around the World

A Christmas Sing with Bing Around the World

The 1956 album "A Christmas Sing with Bing Around the World" is a recording of a CBS Radio holiday program broadcast on Christmas Eve in 1955. Bing Crosby hosts the program and contributes his own vocals to the Christmas music. Interspersed throughout the music are brief reports by CBS foreign correspondents on the Christmas proceedings in various countries, with Bill Downs broadcasting from Rome. Other Murrow Boys including Howard K. Smith and Doug Schoenbrun also contributed.

Here is the portion from Bill Downs from Rome (around the thirty-one minute mark)
BING CROSBY: Really no "Around the World" trip at Christmastime would be complete without a stop at Rome; and a chance to hear one of the finest choirs in the world, the Vatican Choir. So we take you now to Rome and our good friend Bill Downs.

BILL DOWNS: This is Bill Downs in Rome. Listen to the bells of St. Peter's calling the faithful to Midnight Mass on this holiest of nights. For, in Italy, Christmas is essentially a religious holiday. Solemn, yet joyful in a way that only the Italians seem to have in enjoying their religion. Christmas Eve is for going to church, and if you're lucky and live in Rome, you can go to St. Peter's and hear the Vatican Choir sing "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle" — (Thou Descendeth from the Stars).
